Abstract [en]

The existence of variation has been a major problem within industry since the early days of the industrial revolution. The fact that two parts will never be identical, forces every organisation to find a strategy for how to master variation in order to be able to put their products together. Process capability studies, a method designed to judge whether a process is capable or not, often plays an important part in such a strategy. Recent research shows that process capability studies are often used incorrectly and without any connection to other improvement methods. Therefore, this paper presents a new strategy for how to master variation which is based on the use of process capability studies and where clear connections to other improvement methods are described. By using these improvement methods together in a suitable way the chances of mastering variation and achieving capable processes will be increased considerably compared to what would have been accomplished when using them separately.
