System Simulation of Regenerative Braking with Electric Machine Overload

Abstract [en]
The study investigates whether it is possible to increase the regenerated energy of electrically powered trucks by overloading the electric machine while braking. This is done while monitoring the temperature of the electric machine, which is seen as the limiting factor of the overload. A working driver model trying to mimic a human driver is proposed. The driver model is, among other things, capable of standing still for a given time, which until now has not been possible. The simulations are performed using system simulations, Scania’s internal tool VTAB is used. The results shows that an overloading the electric machine during regenerative braking potentially can increase the regenerated energy by 3% without much impact on the temperature of the electric machine.
