Abstract [en]

This thesis explores how graphic design can challenge and change the common stereotypes about Thai women in Sweden. The thesis looks into specific design strategies that can help change how people think about these stereotypes and discusses the potential challenges involved.

The backdrop of this study is set in the realm of cultural representation and intercultural communication, important in a multicultural society like Sweden. With a notable Thai community in Sweden, addressing and challenging the stereotypes affecting this group is essential.

Important concepts in this thesis include for example decolonial design, which challenges colonial influences in design, and empathy in design, which focuses on understanding users' perspectives. Other key ideas are visual ethics, which deals with ethical issues in visual communication, and norm-critical design, which explores how design can question and change societal norms.

The method involved combining research with the creation of graphic designs meant to engage and provoke thought in the viewer. Each design decision, from color choices to the style of text and overall layout, was made with the goal of effectively and sensitively communicating the messages.

The results show that graphic design can significantly encourage discussions and increase awareness about complex social issues. The series of posters created for this study not only drew attention but also encouraged viewers to think and talk about the stereotypes of Thai women. This shows the potential of graphic design as a tool for social change, starting important conversations about integration and diversity.

In summary, this thesis provides new insights and methods for using graphic design not just for its visual appeal but also as a tool for ethical engagement and social influence. It underscores the powerful role of design in shaping how we see and interact with each other, highlighting design's capacity to bring up cultural understanding and social progress.
