The importance of meaningful work and its impact on stress reduction : A literature study from a health promotion perspective (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
Introduction: Work plays a central role in the well-being of individuals and the functioning of society. However, in today's acceleration society, stress and burnout are increasing due to heightened demands and difficulties in separating work from leisure. This burden has serious consequences for both individuals and society, including lost productivity and increased healthcare costs. Meaningfulness has been shown to be an important factor in promoting well-being. However, studies examining the link between meaningful work and stress levels are limited, highlighting the need for further research in this area. Aim: To explore the quantitative research regarding whether meaningful work can contribute to stress reduction and to identify contributing factors and effects. Method: A literature review was conducted through searches in five databases (APA PsycInfo, CINAHL, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science) and a systematic review, resulting in eleven relevant scientific articles with a quantitative approach. The articles were published in the databases between 2018–2024. Results: The results of the included articles were categorized into three areas: (1) the correlations between meaningful work and work-related stress/burnout, (2) influencing factors (job satisfaction, overqualification, quality of social sharing of emotions, personality traits, job security, and autonomy), and (3) effects resulting from meaningful work. Conclusion: Meaningful work generally has a positive effect on stress reduction. The authors emphasize the importance of integrating meaningful work as part of occupational health efforts to promote health at both the individual and public health levels.
