This chapter describes how district heating substations can be controlled in order to improve customer comfort and system performance, and how energy measurement data can be used to monitor the functionality of substations. We primarily consider indirectly connected district heating substations, where the primary energy supply system is separated from internal building heating and tap water systems. Different approaches to achieve higher efficacy of the district heating substation and the district heating system are introduced, as are methods for the detection of typical faults in district heating substations. These methods enable identification of faults that result in abnormal energy metering data, such as incorrectly configured or installed substations, or faults in the energy meter instrumentation, including the communication system and sensors.
