Abstract [en]

The modern home environment increasingly demands furniture that not only meets ergonomic standards but also integrates seamlessly with aesthetic preferences. This thesis explores the integration of ergonomics and visual appeal in the design of home chairs, with a focus on addressing the health needs associated with prolonged seating in home environments. As remote work and digital lifestyles become more prevalent, the necessity for furniture that supports both comfort and style has become evident.

The study involves a comprehensive analysis of the current market, identifying a gap where residential seating often prioritizes aesthetics over ergonomics, leaving a significant portion of the population at risk of musculoskeletal disorders. Through a user-centered design approach, this project aims to develop a chair that balances ergonomic principles with aesthetic appeal, inspired by Scandinavian Design. The research includes literature review, benchmarking, user observations, surveys, interviews, posture analysis, iterative prototyping and user testing, leading to a final chair design that supports healthy posture while seamlessly integrating with the visual aesthetics of home interiors.

Key findings from the research highlighted that many individuals experience significant discomfort in the lower back due to poorly designed backrests in existing home chairs. The iterative design and testing process in this project led to the development of a backrest prototype that resulted a reduced lower back pain, as validated by user feedback. The final design includes a contoured backrest that supports the natural curvature of the spine, alleviating pressure on the lumbar region during seated posture. It is thoughtfully designed to blend into home environments, with form and material choices inspired by Scandinavian modern design principles. The outcome of this research contributes to the growing field of ergonomic furniture design, emphasizing the importance of integrating health, sustainability, and aesthetics in everyday home furniture. This thesis presents a new perspective on how home seating can be reimagined to meet the evolving demands of modern living.
