Occupational therapy support for bereaved individuals : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract

Background: The experience of losing a loved one through bereavement has been described in previous research as an individual and complex process, a life-event that can lead to upsetting emotions, a major impact on people's lives and the need for therapeutic treatment. The bereavement that follows the loss of a loved one can negatively affect people's health and daily activities. Research on whether and how occupational therapists involves in the treatment of people who have lost a loved one through bereavement is limited, which indicated a need to compile the current knowledge in the field. Aim: The aim of the study was to compile current knowledge on how occupational therapists can support individuals who have experienced bereavement.Method: The authors undertook an integrative literature review of qualitative research to address the aim of the study. A literature search was conducted in the databases CINAHL, PubMed, PsycInfo, Scopus and Google Scholar, resulting in six articles being included in the study. Each article was critically examined for quality. The analysis was conducted in five steps, resulting in an integrated synthesis of qualitative research in the field. Result: The analysis of the included articles led to four themes being identified: Enable emotional expression through creative activities, Promoting social participation through group interventions, Utilizing everyday activities as a supportive resource, and A person-centered approach as a supportive resource. Conclusion: The results of the study indicate that occupational therapy can act supportive to individuals who have experienced bereavement through the use of occupational therapy interventions and resources. However, the research in this field is limited and the methodological quality of included studies showed flaws. Therefore, the findings of this study should be interpreted with caution. Further research with better methodological quality and wider geographical representation is needed to support the results showed in this study.
