AI in Systems Development : A Case Study of a Pilot Project at a Swedish Covernment Agency (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The use of AI tools has increased significantly in recent years, particularly within system development. This thesis aims to investigate how system engineers at a Swedish government agency use and experience AI tools in their daily work. To analyse developers’ attitudes, the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) is employed, complemented by the People-Process-Data-Technology Framework (2PDT) to capture organizational and contextual factors.

The study is a qualitative case study, and data was collected through semi-structured interviews with system developers of varying levels of experience. The results show that the AI tool is primarily used to solve smaller, well-defined problems that do not require deep contextual understanding, as the tool lacks access to the full codebase and internal documentation. Participants also found that the AI tool provided faster and more contextually relevant answers compared to traditional Google searches. Furthermore, junior developers tended to use the AI tool more frequently than their senior colleagues, although the difference was not significant.

The study concludes that while AI tools can enhance the developer experience, they currently have a limited impact on productivity and efficiency.
