The Importance of the Home Environment for Students' Reading Development : A quantitative study on the relationship between literacy practices, reading enjoyment and reading comprehension (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The study aims to produce knowledge about the relationship between literacy practices in the home, reading comprehension and reading enjoyment in students in grade 2. Having good reading comprehension is important for being able to participate in social life. Literacy at home is crucial in the development of students' decoding and reading comprehension. It is therefore important to investigate the relationships between these. The theoretical starting points that form the basis of the study are literacy from a sociocultural perspective and the simple view of reading. Data was collected through questionnaires that the students had to answer and I participated in students' decoding tests and reading comprehension tests that the school did via LegiLexi. These methods were used to be able to correlate the questionnaires with the students' decoding and reading comprehension to discover relationships. The result shows that reading occurs regularly in all homes and is an important activity. Students who read more with an adult show lower decoding ability and reading comprehension, and students who have a higher reading ability read more alone. Furthermore, the results showed that students who do not play games on a computer, tablet or mobile phone show higher decoding and reading comprehension than those who play more often. In addition, the results show that students who use a certain type of activity more often have a positive attitude towards it. To summarize, this study shows that there are certain connections between literacy practices, reading pleasure and reading comprehension in students in grade 2.
