The aim of this project is to develop my skills as a conductor by integratingselected elements from Carlos Kleiber’s gestural language into my own gesturalrepertoire. Throughout my nearly five years of study at the School of Music inPiteå, I have frequently discussed beat patterns and body language with myteachers – elements that are essential to conducting technique. However, in myexperience, the individual nature of conducting gestures is less often addressedin teaching. Since gestures are highly personal and vary between conductors, Ibecame interested in exploring whether I could evolve my own style by studyingand assimilating the gestural patterns of another conductor.This project is inspired by Mikael Bäckman’s method in his doctoral thesis MyBag of Licks (2024), in which he created a portfolio of materials – such as scalesand riffs – for improvisation. Similarly, I aim to develop a personal “gestureportfolio”: a collection of gestures that I can draw from spontaneously in variousmusical contexts.
