Abstract [sv]

Detta examensarbete undersöker hur svenska matematiklärare i årskurs 4–6 ser på matematisk intelligens, samt hur dessa perspektiv kommer till uttryck i undervisningen. Studien har sin teoretiska utgångspunkt i Carol Dwecks (2006) teori om fixed och growth mindset, med särskilt fokus på tre didaktiska aspekter: lärares användning av feedback till elever, hanteringen av elevers misstag och felsvar i matematik samt undervisning om hjärnans plasticitet. Undersökningen bygger på en kvantitativ metod där en enkät distribuerades till sammanlagt 52 matematiklärare från olika delar av Sverige. Resultatet visar att en majoritet av deltagarna uppvisar ett starkt growth mindset och att detta mindset i stor utsträckning kan kopplas till didaktiska strategier som enligt tidigare forskning främjar elevers motivation, uthållighet och lärande i matematik. Studien visar även svaga indicier på att lärare med ett mer growth mindset gällande matematisk intelligens tenderar att använda sig av mer elevstärkande feedback och är mer positiva till att integrera misstag som en del av lärandet. Tydligare indikationer fann man kring att lärare med högre nivå av growth mindsetundervisar i högre utsträckning om hjärnans plastiska förmåga vid inlärning. Arbetet syftar till att bidra till en ökad förståelse för hur lärarens mindset kan påverka undervisningen och därmed också elevers möjlighet att lyckas i matematik.

Abstract [en]

This thesis examines how Swedish mathematics teachers in grades 4–6 perceive mathematical intelligence and how these perspectives are reflected in their teaching practices. The study found upon Carol Dweck’s (2006) theory of fixed and growth mindsets, with particular focus on three didactic aspects: teachers’ use of feedback, their handling of students’ mistakes in mathematics, and their instruction on the brain’s neuroplasticity. A quantitative method was employed, and a survey was distributed to a total of 52 mathematics teachers from various regions of Sweden. The results show that most participants demonstrate a clear growth mindset, which can be associated with didactic strategies previously shown to support students’ motivation, perseverance, and learning in mathematics. The study also reveals weak indications that teachers with a stronger growth mindset tend to provide more constructive and empowering feedback and are more positive towards integrating mistakes as part of the learning process. More distinct patterns were found in relation to the extent to which teachers with higher levels of growth mindset include neuroplasticity in their mathematics instruction. The aim of this study is to contribute to a deeper understanding of how teachers’ mindsets may influence their teaching and thereby shape students’ opportunities for success in mathematics.
