Abstract [en]

Assistant nurses is one of the largest occupational groups in Sweden and they are a central partof the welfare state, and the elderly care. At the same time, the elderly care are facing challenges, for example the demographic changes, the increased healthcare needs, understaffing and highsick leave. One important change for the healthcare staff and working conditions came intoeffect on the first of october 2023 which was the rule of 11- hour daily rest. This change meantthat the working shifts needed to be rescheduled for the healthcare staff who worked withinSweden's municipalities and regions. Therefore the purpose of this study is to develop a deeperunderstanding for how the assistant nurses experience the 11-hour daily rest from apsychosocial work environment perspective. This study is based on six interviews with assistantnurses who work in the public sector in the region of Norrbotten, Sweden. All of the participantsare working in specialized housing for elderly, referred to in Swedish as SÄBO. In this study athematic analysis has been done and the theory that has been used is Karasek and Theorellmodel of demand, control and support and House theory of social support. The results indicatedthat the assistants nurses daily work is characterized by high demands, a pressure of time andan absence of staff, and at the same time the social support appears to have an impact in theworkload experiences. The 11-hour daily rest has led to changes in the working hours whichultimately means that the work rhythm, social support, information between shifts and thepossibility to swap shifts has changed. Some of the participants described that the recovery hasbeen improved, and they also described that it is easier to unwind after late shifts. This studyindicates that the rule of the 11-hour daily rest is not isolated from other types of changes, butrather a part of a complex context.
